Religion Is Not Spirituality: The Hidden Origins of Belief

What if spirituality and organized religion are not the same thing?

In this Jordan Maxwell interview, Jordan examines the difference between personal spiritual experience and institutional religion. He begins by tracing the long relationship between church and government, describing the ancient priest-king as both political ruler and mediator between humanity and the divine. From there, he argues that theology, social systems and political authority have often developed together rather than separately.

Jordan then turns inward, discussing his own belief in a Creator and the spiritual experiences that shaped his worldview. He contrasts that personal connection with churches, hierarchies and religious organizations, arguing that spirituality exists between the individual and the divine rather than depending on a priest, denomination or institution.

The conversation moves into reincarnation, where Jordan discusses passages and traditions he believes were removed or suppressed as church authority developed. He connects that subject with the papacy, kings, political power and the close relationship he sees between religion and government throughout Western history.

The second half becomes a study of symbols and religious origins. Jordan explains why ancient symbols can survive for centuries even when people forget what they originally meant, using the swastika as an example of a much older symbol later appropriated by Nazi Germany.

He then moves into one of the most unusual sections of the interview: his interpretation of Yahweh, Mount Sinai and ancient volcano symbolism. Jordan compares biblical descriptions of cloud, fire, thunder and lightning with older ideas about sacred mountains and volcano deities, then connects the giving of the law at Sinai with Hebrew religious symbols and festivals.

The presentation continues with the rabbinical/priestly blessing, the raised-hand symbol later made famous by Mr. Spock’s Vulcan salute, and Jordan’s wider argument that modern religious and cultural symbols often preserve much older meanings. Near the end, he discusses the Canaanites, the misuse of biblical passages and the survival of Canaanite and Babylonian imagery into later cultures.

Jordan’s larger message throughout the interview is consistent: examine the foundations of belief for yourself, learn the history behind the symbols, and distinguish personal spirituality from the institutions that claim authority over it.
